The definition of social deviance is different not only for each group or clique that people are a part of, but also vary from person to person. Because deviance is/can be so subjective, it is highly likely that many people do things, or are a part of a group that is considered as deviant to another group or individual. In this circumstance, we will be taking a look at what is considered deviant by the people who post images on sites such as FailBlog.com and EpicFail.com. The images posted on these sites obviously portray what the uploader sees as deviant, but we can conclude a certain level of acquiescence on the part of the audience as to the degree that they agree that the image is humorous.
Taking a stroll through the numerous posts submitted by users on EpicFail.com over the course of three days has given me a snapshot of what the people who frequent this site, and sites like it, see as deviant. I have selected a sample of four of these postings to give you an idea of the types of people and actions that are seen as deviant to patrons of EpicFail.com.
Many posts on EpicFail.com include people typing or doing something unintelligent, but when a post does not contain something like that, it usually is taking a pot shot at overweight people, or people who have decided to make themselves look more “ideal” in order to conform to what they believe society says is beautiful.
This first image gets to me on a couple of different levels. First, I do not appreciate the fact that being fat in today’s society is seen at all as funny. Second, it appears that the picture was taken in a restaurant or bar, and because the photographer seems to be quite close, they had to take out their cell phone, turn on the camera, and take a shot of the person from what appears to be shoulder level, not even concealing that they are taking a picture of her.
This second image’s purpose on being posted to EpicFail seems to be to point out that she looks fake and overly “beautified.” The picture was taken by this woman, and probably posted on a social networking site like Facebook. The person who posted it on EpicFail.com got the picture from her profile and posted it so other people could have a laugh at her expense. Seeing people who feel the need to severely beautify themselves points to an issue that has developed in our society, that is the image of the “ideal” man and woman. It is ironic that society has told her to be like the “ideal” woman, but when she tries too hard, society sees her as a social deviant from “normal” appearance.
These last two images both point to the view that overweight people are deviant. This is because the majority of images on EpicFail.com that provide a view of what users consider deviant is aimed at overweight people. The site has many posts that include overweight people that are “funny” for no other apparent reason than that they are overweight. Their actions in the image are not usually what make the image “funny,” but the fact that they are overweight and doing what they are doing makes their “Fail Rating” go up.

  1. I really liked your blog. I also did my blog on the fact that overweight people in our country are considered deviant and it just disgusts me that there are sites like these out there where their main purpose is to make fun of heavier individuals. I really liked what you said about the woman who was "overly beautified". People just cannot win, either they are too "ugly" and are considered deviant or they are trying to hard to be "attractive" and are again considered deviant. If only we could accept people for who they are, not just for what they look like.
